Dr. Tamara D. Herold

The School of Criminal Justice and Criminology is pleased to welcome Dr. Tamara D. Herold as a Professor, beginning Spring 2026. Dr. Herold joins the faculty with an internationally recognized record of scholarship and leadership in environmental criminology, crime prevention, place management, and evidence-based policing. She most recently served as Senior Advisor to the National Institute of Justice at the U.S. Department of Justice, where she advanced national efforts to translate research into policy and practice.

Dr. Herold’s widely cited research has shaped policing strategies in the United States and abroad. She has an extensive record of working directly with police agencies and practitioners to improve practice, including the development of the award-winning Place Network Investigations violence reduction strategy. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, books, and policy reports and is a frequent keynote speaker nationally and internationally. In her new role, Dr. Herold will collaborate with the ALERRT Center to advance police research, training, and evidence-based practice through the establishment of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing at Texas State University.
