Can a doctoral student take a semester off?
A doctoral student may take up to a year off but must notify the Graduate College.

Once I begin to take dissertation hours, do I have to continue to take them until I graduate?
Once a student begins to enrol in dissertation, the student must continue to enroll until the dissertation is completed. Often students do not receive supervision in the summer, since faculty may be away, so we do not require the students to enroll in the summer. There is a one-hour dissertation course, which could be taken if the student is only receiving minimal supervision.
